Do you need to change your AC filters?

Yes, if you start to experience less cool air, or more dust and allergens emerging when you use your AC. But before you consider replacing it, give it a good cleaning by removing it and cleaning it with soap and water, after you’ve vacuumed it. Dirt, debris and pet dander can not only lower the air quality, but also cause wear and tear on your AC.

We recommend that you change your filters at least every six months. Ideally, it should be once every three months, especially if you live in an environment that has a fair bit of pet dander and other allergens, or in an area that is highly industrial or has a lot of vehicle traffic. Changing air filters regularly helps to maintain your indoor air quality for better health and hygiene.

A stand-alone AC unit’s filters are easily to access and therefore easy to clean. What if your HVAC system runs throughout your home? In this case, you’ll need to locate where the filters are in your system’s duct-work. Some ducts may be marked with “filter”, making them easy to find. Typically, filters are located near the blower sections of your furnace if your system is used for both heating and cooling.

It’s generally more cost-and-time-efficient, however, to hire a HVAC tech to quickly locate and clean/replace your filters in this case. Most filter cleaning and replacement is typically not expensive and can make a huge difference to your air quality.
