Can using Geothermal Heating help you save money?
Geothermal energy involves utilizing the heat from the ground to supply your HVAC system (both cooling and heating). If you’re looking to move to a non-fossil-fueled system, this is a technology worth considering. Essentially, loops of pipe are inserted deep under the soil, and special fluid is pumped through it as it’s heated by the earth’s natural heat. A heat pump transports energy to your HVAC system, powering both your A/C and your heaters. Geothermal heating has been known to reduce utility bills in some cases. And with the earth’s temperature at a reliably constant 50 degrees , you’re assured of consistent energy pumped into your HVAC system, whatever the above-ground outside temperatures. Think of your home as being heated and cooled by the very ground it stands on i.e. sustainable energy! Cost-wise, your area may qualify for tax credits and such when it comes to geothermal heating.
Every project, however, is different, and in most cases, the initial capital outlay will be higher than for conventional systems, and you may not always experience a good ROI (return on investment).
