What can you do to minimize your energy bill?
Maintenance is key to minimizing your energy costs over the long-term. When parts of your HVAC system aren’t working at optimum, you lose efficiency (see the FAQ for more on maintaining your systems). It also helps to insulate your home, especially your windows.
Adjusting your thermostat higher or lower (depending on the weather) also helps to manage energy bills. If there is no one at home for the entire day, you can keep the thermostat at a lower temperature until you get home. Avoid large temperature differentials between daytime and nighttime settings.
Do not shut of heat or cool air entirely as it takes a lot of energy to get the space warmed or cooled from scratch; better to maintain minimum higher (or lower) temperature as suggested above, and adjust when you need to. Programmable thermostats are great for making auto-adjustments so that you don’t have to constantly tinker with temperature controls. For the winter months, ensure that temperatures are sufficient to help ensure no freezing of pipes. Wifi-enabled thermostats can be installed for remote monitoring and control of the system, along with alerts on system malfunction sent to you and your system contractor.
